Günter Wallner was born in Vienna. He began his musical education at the age of five with piano lessons and continued with the “Vienna Choir Boys” (with Prof. Hans Gillesberger, among others). Günter Wallner completed his studies at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts (choral directing with Johannes Prinz) as well as at the Vienna Conservatory (conducting with Prof. Reinhard Schwarz and Prof. Georg Mark). In 1999 he graduated with honors. He participated in various master classes with Vladimir Fedosejev, David Zinman, Colin Metters (Royal Academy of Music, London), Howard Griffiths and others. After completing his studies Günter Walter was choral director and Kapellmeister at the Cape Town Opera House (South Africa) from 1999 to 2001. He was invited to conduct new productions at the Cape Town Opera House (including The Magic Flute) and guest conduct the Operama in Pretoria, at the Cape Town International Opera Festival and a concert series with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
Subsequently, he was engaged in the same functions at the Nuremberg State Theater till 2004. In 2002 the opera choir of the Nuremberg State Opera was nominated under his direction for Opera Choir of the Year in the “Opernwelt Jahrbuch” (Opera World Yearbook). Besides his work as a choral director, he was responsible for numerous performances as a conductor; these include Werther, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, La Traviata, L’elisir d’amore and many more. From 2004 to 2008 Günter Wallner took over the position of 2nd Kapellmeister at the Dortmund Theater. In these years he was able to expand the repertory of important works of opera literature such as The Poacher, Swan Lake, The Land of Smiles, Madame Butterfly, The Nutcracker, Manon Lescaut, Hansel and Gretel, The Marriage of Figaro, Nabucco, Fidelio, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, The Tales of Hoffmann, María de Buenos Aires as well as in the musical genre with My Fair Lady and La Cage Aux Folles. In the summers of 2005 and 2006 Günter Wallner was the initiator and musical director of the first international tour of the Cape Town Opera House with “Showboat” to the Nuremberg State Opera and the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo. Günter Wallner has been the choral director and Kapellmeister at the Klagenfurt Theater since 2008. Numerous choral productions and performances took place during this time, including: La Wally, Countess Maritza, The Flying Dutchman, Hansel and Gretel, Die Winterreise (Winter Journey), Boris Godunov, Casanova, Aida, The Gypsy Baron, The Csárdás Princess, Victor/Victoria, A Chorus Line, Swan Lake, Don Giovanni, Carmen and The Wizard of Oz. Since September 2018 Günter Wallner is the choral director of the Klagenfurt Chamber Choir.
