Starting in 2006 MIMF, short for Murau International Music Festival, took place in Murau every year. A concert series awaited the audience and enthusiastic choir singers gathered together. In the past years there were continuous innovations. In 2013 and 2014 additional orchestra workshops for string players took place and from 2015 till 2018 creative composition workshops were held. Since 2013 there was the possibility to submit compositions and have them premiered; since 2016 an international call for composition submissions via the Austrian embassies, consulates and cultural forums was publicized. In 2019, a composition prize was awarded for the first time.
In 2018 the final Gala Concert, the highlight of the festival, was relocated to the Murau parish church with the Austrian premiere of the oratorio “NOSTOS” by Zane Zalis. The interior of the church was integrated into the artistic concept through the inclusion of light art. In 2019 the festival was moved up from summer to spring. Günter Wallner held the post of artistic director in 2019 after Zane Zalis retired from the festival in 2018. With the establishment of the Murau Kultur and Stadtmarketing GmbH in 2013, Marko Zeiler was entrusted with the directorship of the quickly growing festival.
The festival, for which there is still a financing commitment from the province of Styria and the municipality of Murau until 2021, will not take place in the future. Reasons, therefore, lie in the divergent conceptions of content on the part of the organizers and the municipality of Murau.
Thus it is a farewell with a smile and a heavy heart as MIMF was a regular feature of the cultural scene in Murau. The municipality of Murau is looking confidently towards the future; there is already any number of ideas. And new tasks are already waiting for Marko Zeiler and his organizational team. The organizers and other persons responsible all agree: “We would like to sincerely thank our audience, the participants, our sponsors and supporters as well as all cooperating partners who accompanied us on our journey through the years – without them MIMF would not have been the success it was.”
